Change is possible ...

I am aware the title of this post is hardly a bombshell but I still manage to surprise myself. especially when I look back on my twenties and barely recognise myself. What inspired today's post? You ask or Maybe you're not asking that at all well tough because I plan on telling you regardless. I was on my coffee break today in work and once again one of the girls had made a cake and brought it into work( this happens at Least once a week) actually on this particular day there were cakes in the canteen and everyone was tucking into the yummiest one ( or at least the one that looked the most appealing ) all whilst I sit there eating some nuts and dried fruit. and you know what I was actually fine With that. I was quite enjoying my break time snack but also trying not to draw attention to myself. I think as a side note it speaks volumes about our society that its weird for someone to eat a healthy snack but perfectly ok to have a few slices of calf before noon. I was however th...

Fat chance- a review

Fat chance. : the real truth about sugar - Dr Robert Lustig This book is written by a world renowned obesity expert that has investigated the truth about Our sugar laden diet and the part that it has to play in causing obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. He looks at how the changes In the food industry have affected out weight gain, not of the most prominent examples being High fructose corn Syrup as a sugar replacement, but he also examines why political forces and those high up in the food industry don't want things to change. I found this book to be both informative and alarming, I've always known sugar was not good for me in any respect but it was not until I read fat chance that I realized quite how damaging it can Be. Ironically this kind of book Is exactly the kind of thing that people on High sugar diets need to be reading, if they really knew what they were putting into their bodies then perhaps they would be prepared to make real changes instead of goi...

When I was small, I was so small I could fit inside a matchbox

When I was a child my father was big into hiking and consequently as young children myself and my siblings were taken on many a hike. Other children I knew spent Saturdays watching cartoons and playing with friends but we usually spent it half way up some mountain. It probably helped that our house is located on a hill on a road that dips down into town but you don't have to travel far up it to find yourself in the woods. many acres of terrain to be explored and it wasn't possible to sit in our garden without getting a glimpse of this. When I was young enough to be suitably Enthusiastic each Saturday brought the possibility of adventure. We could be splashing With our dogs in the streams of glenary or creeping through the woods that lead to the lake wondering nervously what creatures lurked in the dark shadows. Even as an adult I feel a little unnerved walking through a dark woods and feel a fear that can only be a byproduct of a voracious appetite for reading and an over...

The lost art of doing nothing

Image
Today I found myself in quite the unusual position. I had the day off Work, I'd finished my workout and I had no plans for the rest of day and it left me feeling a little panicked as though there was something I had forgotten like I was half way into town wondering had I left the iron on. Now I know there are plenty of people who while away many an afternoon without a plan to be found and if talk in the break room is to believed many of my colleagues fall out of bed mid afternoon on a Sunday barely shuffling out of their pyjamas for the day. I'll admit that until I discovered crossfit I was quite partial to a lazy Sunday reading a book Or watching a movie but it seems to be something I've forgotten how to do of late. Now I do understand for plenty of people with families and work commitments it's difficult to sit down for 5 minutes undisturbed but I still feel there's a growing epidemic of people who actually don't know how to spend time in their own com...

The weight of water -a review

Image
The weight of water -Sarah Crossan The weight of water is a young adult novel about a young polish girl who moves to England with her mother in search of her father. It is a story about what it is like to be a teenager in a foreign country trying to Fit and falling in love. I will admit the beautifully illustrated cover is what drew me this book ( even though they say don't judge a book by its cover, I frequently do and I'm truly a sucker for a good cover) but then when I actually took a proper look at it I realised the author gas done something very unusual in that she has used poems to tell the entire story. Maybe a story told entirely through poems shouldn't work but it does to beautiful effect. I really enjoyed reading a book in this style and I have to say its a shame that medium Will probably put a lot of teenagers off reading it

paper towns - a review

The Blurb "Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificent, adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she opens his bedroom window late one night and summons him to join her on a ingenious campaign of revenge-he follows. After their all-nighter ends and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to find that Margo has not. always an enigma, she now becomes a mystery and soon Q learns that there are clues to be followed in his search for Margo" So I seem to be on a bit of a run with the John green novels, I cant help it. He is one of the more interesting voices in young adult fiction today. His books centre more on characters than the events themselves but there is something utterly compelling about them. It's easy to see why teenagers identify with this style of writing and now I know what to expect I know I'll shortly be reading the two books I haven't gotten to yet. I found I was a little disappointed in how the book ended but I feel it ...

30 things to learn before you're 30

Image
1) It's difficult to be healthy when you're in an unhealthy relationship. 2) It's tough to see the value in yourself if you're with someone who doesn't. 3) You are what you do so if you Change what you do then you'll change what you are. 4) Judging by how strong my reaction to sugar withdrawal is, it may just be the root to all evil ( or at least some evil). 5) That I have a voice worth listening to even if I'm the only one who listens. 6) I am not defined by my past mistakes even though they have helped shape me into the person I Am today. 7) It's never a good idea to get inside a tumbler dryer, even if your sister dares you, you might get stuck (I learned thus as a small child and i never made that mistake again ). 8) Doing something you hate a lot doesn't. Always make you hate it less ( like burpees). 9) Sometimes it's ok to just eat the whole jar of jam ( see photo nom nom). 10) That I'm stronger than I ever though I could be. 1...
