Oh valentine ( tonight's post Is brought to you by hallmark)

Okay so firstly I have to tell you that the title was a lie designed to lure you in or something like that. Hallmark would probably not appreciate me slandering the holiday they created.

So I'm going to come out and say it. I don't see the point in Valentines day and I think the whole thing is a con. Im not and never have been a fan of this so called holiday/marketing opportunity.
It's probably for the best that I'm single because god help the poor chap who'd
Have to buy me something for Valentina day. I'm off sugar so that rules out chocolates. I'm not four so that rules out teddies giant or otherwise and I really don't see the point of flowers that are only going to wither and die within
Days of receiving them, I have already cynically reviewed the Valentines gifts we sell in work. We have teddies for over €100 and I'm going to come out and say it, if a guy I was dating went out and spent that kind of money on a teddy I'd be forced to dump him out of principle alone We also have cheesy photo frames, Keyrings that split in two and a whole load of pointless crap that needless to say many the sucker will panic buy over the next day or two.

Much as I feel complete and utter disdain for the commercial side of Valentines day there is one aspect of it that I do quite like. we decided to run a design a card competition In work and I contacted all the schools and over the last few days we've been receiving envelopes full of glitter and crepe paper. It's like an explosion of cuteness in the shop and there's an innocence to it that goes against all the commercialism you see in the card department.
We've started displaying a lot of them in work, see pictures below and I've had a few chuckles reading them. It really cheered me up reading some of the inscriptions.
My favourite of all the cards had a picture inside of a broken heart labelled us and one half had you written on it and the other had me and beneath that it said this is not a good example of us, the child who made it was 9 and I had a good laugh
When I Read it.

Another child (aged 12) wrote happy valentines day darling from your lover. God help her, what a thing to write in a valentines card !

Or this one 'to my love, be my valentine.
Ps please. Pps pretty please' then a picture of a broken heart and written underneath 'this will never happen to us why because I love you'

Oh man if you take out all the books and I really do love the books, I would have to say the kids are my favourite part of the job. I think a short story competition will have to be organized soon mostly because if the valentines cards are anything to go it would make for some seriously entertaining reading.
